Mars' takeover of Wrigley adds close to 20% to its sales turnover in Europe

FFT approaches its analysis from the demand side (i.e. not the company side) by establishing the size of both retail and foodservice markets, and attributing market shares to all suppliers in each country and product (i.e. in final retail prices and foodservice buy-in prices).

Europe: Altogether 22 country markets are covered, including all the European Community (EC) members plus non-members Norway and Switzerland (excepting only the 3 Baltic states Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus):
The chart above illustrates some salient points:
  • 300 country & product market shares have been attributed to Mars across the 22 countries covered in Europe (see below) and in some 30 product markets.
  • The top 3 product markets already account for over half of Mars turnover and the top 6 for over 75%, leaving a long tail of also ran products.
  • 30 of these market shares are contributed by Wrigley, essentially in chewing gum markets, but also in some cases for other sugar confectionery.
  • Mars annual sales turnover can hence be estimated at some Euros 13 billion (to repeat, at final retail and foodservice buy-in prices), some Euros 2 billion of which coming from Wrigley.

    The United Kingdom, Germany and France make up
    over 60% of Mars' sales in Europe

    From a country perspective, the same concentration on just three markets appears. Wrigley being also concentrated in the same 3 markets, Mars country distribution has not been greatly affected by the takeover.
